But it wasn't an ordinary special: It was a roast.

This was bad news for Hanna-Barbera, primarily because they planned on airing another special the following week. Unsurprisingly, it tanked in the ratings, becoming the second least watched show of the week. It certainly wasn't a terrible special, but it lacked the action necessary for a superhero gathering of that magnitude. That doesn't stop them from diffusing the bomb, saving the day and ultimately regaining their powers. The villains then get the heroes to drink a potion that takes away their superpowers. In it, the Justice League briefly reunited for a party before the Legion of Doom announces they've hidden a deadly bomb. The first special, titled Legend of the Superheroes: The Challenge, aired on January 18. For every Batman fan, this was must-see TV. Even Frank Gorshin reprised his role as the Riddler. What made this special even more exciting was the inclusion of Adam West and Burt Ward, who reprised their roles of Batman and Robin from the live-action TV show.

His genitalia is as visible as a ballet star.Hanna-Barbera put on an amazingly bizarre live-action TV special in the 1970s One amazing detraction (depending on how you want to look at it, then this may not be for kids) is clearly Green Lantern should have wore a protective cup or something. I all but suspect one of the two Saturday morning Captain Marvels were sought for this as well. Might have been fun back then, but still enjoyable to see these earliest hero depictions. The first one I missed the previous week.

I remembered the second program, the roast with Ed McMahon from back when it originally aired and I thought that was dull. It's so low-budget, you can see people across the street watching when Solomon Grundy and Blac k Canary interact. They could have just run around and fought one another, like wresters (I long ago determined if some sports programs like football wore costumes like superheroes, I would be spellbound). Whoever did this clearly knew the comic books as they even put in the Legion villian of Mordru as the leader, instead of the later hyped up Darkseid.īut the look of many of the performers was accurate. Someone took West, Ward and Gorshin from the campy 60s show and just made it all out comedy, with very good additions of Charlie Callas as Sinestro (with no purple makeup, Callas' face best delivered the Sinestro look), Jeff Altman as the WEather Wizard and Howard Morris as Sinestro.
